Updating Printer Drivers

A printer driver is one of the computer software which is essential to proper communication between your printer and computer. Every printer brand comes with its own specific software of this kind, with the version of said software differing based on the operating system. The driver is responsible in part for converting data intended for printing into the specific form of output which the printer can manage.

With outdated printer drivers, you may face printer driver issues come time to print. If your printer has not been performing at its best for some reason, then it is probably time to download and install the latest driver which has been released for it.

Updating Printer Drivers

How you should go about updating your printer drivers would depend on the OS that you have, which is why the best thing you can do at the outset is checking the user manual that came along with the thing. Failing that, you can also check out what the manufacturer’s website has to say about your specific printer driver error. If you are running Windows 10, then the following steps need to be performed.

      • Head over to Control Panel.
      • Choose Hardware and Sound.
      • Pick Device Manager so that you get to see all of the hardware connected to the machine, and then seek out the Printers drop-down. That should show you a list of the relevant printers.
      • Right click on the printer for which you wish to update drivers, and then choose Update Driver.
      • Select whether you will be searching for the right driver manually or automatically. The former lets you specify a location on your hard drive, and takes less time if you know specifically where that is. The Automatically option works best if you have it somewhere on the computer but do not know exactly where.
      • If Windows is not able to find a new driver from this, you have the option of finding the right one and downloading it from the manufacturer’s website and then installing it manually.
      • Run the installation wizard and follow the prompts until the driver is fully installed.

Windows 7 users would need to perform slightly different steps to update their printer drivers. These steps are as follows.

      • Head over to Control Panel.
      • Find Device Manager from search, and then click on it to bring up the window showing all of the hardware connected to your machine.
      • Your connected printer can be found on the list of devices shown in this way. You would find it under Universal Serial Bus or Ports (COM and LPT).
      • Choose the printer with a right click and then click on Properties.
      • Head to the Driver tab and choose the option shown as Update Driver, and just as you would have in Windows 10, choose whether you want the driver installer found manually or automatically.

Updating Printer Drivers

It is simple enough checking the manufacturer’s website for driver updates. For instance, users of Lexmark printers can find updates on the support page, as can those of Samsung and Xerox printers. The steps would differ from those above when updating your printer drivers for an OS other than Windows 7 and Windows 10, but for that, you have us to call for assistance.

Why Learn The Work Of Updating Drivers?

There is almost no telling these days whether or when a person will decide to update their OS. Afterward, they often find that their printers are not functioning like they used to because of an added compatibility issue. This is why it is important to learn how to update a printer driver properly, especially in cases where the updated printer driver is unavailable. Printer manufacturers know how this works, and put out new drivers so that users can have their older printers work well with newer operating systems and programs.

Driver updates also remove any bugs and other issues, while also adding additional features which the user never had access to up until then. With the right drivers in place, the computer’s OS and printer can communicate in all the needed ways, and this even prevents the computer from crashing for no apparent reason.

Universal Printer Drivers

These can be very useful in, say, an office where they run different computers with different OSs, and a range of new-fangled printers for office-wide use. These printers might work well, but their specific drivers would probably not go well with each and every OS being used. That is where a universal printer driver can do the most good.

Setting Printer Share Permissions

Maybe your printer issue has nothing to do with a printer driver error and something to do with the share permissions going awry. To fix this, you would need to first share the printer in question from the host computer and then turn on the network discovery feature. You would also need to turn on File and printer sharing where the guest computers are concerned.
